Creating a Good Design

A good framing design will achieve two purposes; the first is to enhance the artwork, and the second is to help transition the artwork to its environment. When you are choosing a mat and frame for a piece of artwork, you want to look at the overall color scheme, style, and design of the piece.

The design process usually starts with the mats. The mats are used to give separation between the glass and art as well as to accent the art and to give your eye visual space from the frame. There are many options with mat colors, textures, layers, and designs to choose from. – more on matting and fillets.

After picking out the right combination of mats the next component is the frame. Frames come in many different shapes, finishes, styles, and textures and when choosing one you want to consider the style of artwork and also the environment in which the artwork will be displayed. You also want to make sure the physical and visual size of the frame is fitting for the artwork. – more on choosing a frame.

Mounting – is a key element to a framing project. The wrong type of mounting for pastels, prints, posters, and cross-stitches can make a very rich design look sloppy or cheap.

Glazing (glass), the final framing component, is important because it protects the artwork from insects, airborne pollutants and from ultra-violet rays. Conservation clear glass is the recommended choice because of its UV protective properties, but when glare becomes an issue non-glare glass is a great choice. – more on glass.
